My amazing, wonderful, fantastic advisory brought in $159.88 for relief for Haiti. They decided to send the money to the American Red Cross.

Helping the Friends of Uganda

Please help and forward to your friends and family!

Friends Serving Uganda (FSU) has been nominated as one of the charities in the MiPro Gives Back campaign. MiPro Consulting is awarding $10,000 to the charity that gets the most votes on their website from now until April 6.

http://www.miproconsulting.com/mipro-gives-back/finalists/

They require your name and email to place a vote. MiPro is a reputable company and will not sell your info, but you may receive their newsletter and have to use the “unsubscribe” option. They require title and company, but I just entered “none” and it was accepted. Rules state only one vote per person.

You will have to click on the alphabet to find Friends Serving Uganda.

Pennies for Patients

Our school had a big kickoff on Monday for our annual Pennies for Patients fundraising program. We have decorated our milk jugs and started collecting money. Mrs. LeMay offered to let her Hawktime style her hair if they raise $1,000! Go for it. Her group last year was only $35 short.

Mosquito Netting Update

We came up with great ideas for fundraising, but the school is already gearing up for Pennies for Patients. Mrs. LeMay and I decided to not compete with the school-wide press for money, so we will work on some of those great ideas in late February. That will still give us time to send money for mosquito nets with Mrs. Nicolai in March.

Check out the Friends Serving Uganda website to see some of the work they're doing. Mrs. Nicolai also sent this picture from the November trip:

Here are some comments from Mrs. Nicolai:
"Hi - this is Annie's mom. Our trip in November was amazing! We were able to give mosquito netting to one of the villages. You can see the pictures on our website:

http://friends.servidia.com/index.asp?PK_lBlogPostID=43

There are still two more villages (Kabuli and Ikumbya) that have not received netting. I got to see first hand the effects of Malaria and it is very sad. The people (and especially the children/babies) are unable to recover from the disease once they contract it.

Please let me know if you have anymore questions. The next trip is in March 2009."

What does "service" mean?

On Friday, December 19, all of Chaska Middle School West was in the gym for a wonderful music concert - 7th & 8th grade bands, choirs, and orchestra. After the concert, I stayed to help clean up so PE classes could start. My heart dropped when I found smashed KitKat bars among the other trash on the floor. I also found packaging from one of the gift-exchange items that we had just shared in advisory.
Why did this disturb me so much? I guess because we have been trying to establish some expectations in advisory about how people should treat other people. Basic, common courtesy involves cleaning up your own messes (or perhaps not creating them in the first place). So here it is Christmas Eve morning and I don't want to forget to communicate with you about this. I realize that it was probably just a few people (and I'm NOT looking for names of culprits!) and that most of the 31 of you would not carelessly toss your trash on the floor (or smash candy bars that had been given to you).
What do you think? What does service mean to you? I'm glad that I was the one to clean up the mess, and not one of the PE teachers. What's in your heart, and do you think about the impact of your actions on others? Work for good, not for ill.
